Winter Flu Vaccine

Winter Flu / Influenza Vaccination
Reduce your Chance of Contracting Flu this Year

Winter Flu, or influenza, is a serious illness caused by the influenza virus. The symptoms can include fevers and shaking, joint and muscle aches, headache, extreme tiredness, coughs and nasal congestion. Influenza is highly infectious and is spread by an airborne route or direct contact such as hand to hand contact. A single sneeze can produce up to 40,000 droplets that others can inhale and become infected, particularly those in close physical contact or proximity.

Why Have an Influenza Vaccination?

Millions of people worldwide develop severe illness during the flu season, not only in children and the elderly, but also healthy adults of all ages. People with co-existing medical conditions such as asthma or COPD are also more susceptible to serious illness due to influenza. The World Health Organisation estimates that half a million people die each year from influenza.

At Nu Health, we offer an annual triple Winter Flu Vaccination that protects against H1N1, and Influenza A and B viruses.

Who should have the Influenza Vaccination?

Influenza affects people of all ages, with serious illness occurring in even the healthiest of adults. We would recommend annual vaccination particularly for people in “At risk” groups, such as:
• Children and adults over 65
• People with chronic respiratory conditions, such as asthma and COPD
• People with heart and kidney disease
• People with diabetes
• People with blood diseases, and those with a weakened immune systems
• Pregnant women
• Healthcare workers
• Carers
• People in regular contact with or are in close proximity to anyone in the above groups
The Winter Flu Vaccination does not help fight influenza if a person has already been affected and is experiencing symptoms; therefore it is important to get vaccinated before the flu season starts.

What Does an Influenza Vaccination Involve?

During a consultation with one of our Doctors, the triple vaccination injection will be administered in the same session. This will help protect you against catching influenza for one flu season. Because the influenza virus rapidly mutates, a vaccination for one flu season may be ineffective in subsequent flu seasons, therefore annual vaccinations are recommended for on-going protection.
