HPV Vaccines
Protect Yourself Against Cervical Cancer and Genital Warts
HPV or the Human Papilloma Virus is the collective name given to a group of infections that are spread via direct contact and can cause a number of conditions. Some of these conditions are mild and self limiting such as verrucas, however some of the strains of HPV have been associated with cervical cancer and genital warts, these strains are only spread by sexual contact. Strains of HPV have been found in 99% of cases of cervical cancer. The HPV virus is thought to be responsible for up to 70% of cervical cancers.
HPV is very common, occurring in up to 50% of the population at some time in their lives. Most of the time, our immune system gets rid of the virus, but in some cases the virus persists and can cause health problems. It is important to know that although there is a link with HPV virus and cervical cancer, most people who contract the virus will not develop cervical cancer.
Why Have a HPV Vaccine?
HPV Vaccines have only been offered on the NHS to girls between 12 and 13 years old since 2008, so if you are over 18 now, it is unlikely you will have had the vaccine. HPV has been linked to a number of conditions including:
• Genital warts
• Skin warts
• Verrucas
• Laryngeal warts
• Cancers of the head, neck, vagina, vulva, cervix, anus and penis.
The vaccine works by protecting against the specific types of HPV that are linked to cervical cancer. The vaccine also protects you from contracting genital warts.
What Does a HPV Vaccine Involve?
The vaccine is given as a course of three injections over a six month period for full immunization. The injection is given into a large muscle such as the buttock or upper arm.
Please note that the vaccine will be ineffective if you have already contracted the HPV virus. You may not be aware if you have been infected as the virus does not always produce symptoms immediately. Having the vaccine when you already have the virus will not cause you harm.
