Hay Fever Injections
Fast, Effective Relief for Sufferers
Hay fever, also known as allergic pollinosis, affects up to one in five people particularly in the summer months. It is caused by an allergic reaction to grass and plant pollen, and can cause symptoms such as itchy skin and eyes, rhinitis (runny nose), and an increase in mucous production.
Why Have a Hay Fever Injection?
The symptoms of hay fever can be very unpleasant and debilitating, particularly for those with co-existing medical conditions such as asthma. A hay fever injection can help prevent symptoms; in most cases one injection is enough for an entire summer period. Hay fever injections are unfortunately not routinely offered by the NHS. Nu Health offers two types of injections, and we will discuss with you at your consultation as to which injection is most suitable for you.
• Kenalog (triamcinolone) is a synthetic corticosteroid which helps dampen the body’s allergic responses. It is widely used to treat allergic rhinitis and hay fever, as well as asthma and inflammatory skin and joint problems. Corticosteroids are very different to anabolic steroids commonly abused by athletes and bodybuilders.
• Grazax (an extract of a grass pollen allergen) specifically reduces the body’s immune response to grass pollen. It is best to have a Grazax injection about 4 months prior to the hay fever season.
What Does a Hay Fever Injection Involve?
Following a consultation with one of our Doctors, the injection will be administered by a registered healthcare professional (either a Doctor or a registered nurse). The injection will be given into a big muscle, usually the buttock muscle, for minimal discomfort.
One injection per year is usually enough to help prevent the symptoms from Hay fever, although for some patients with co-existing health problems, such as asthma, two may be required.
