Cervical Smear Tests
Quick and Professional Service for Women’s Health
Also known as a pap test, smear test or pap smear, a cervical smear can help detect abnormal and pre cancerous cells. Early identification of these cells can prevent you getting cancer or help to catch it earlier with a better chance of successful treatment.
Why Have a Cervical Smear Test?
Smear tests are only routinely offered on the NHS in England to women between 25 and 64 every 3 to 5 years.
If you have any abnormal vaginal symptoms such as bleeding or discharge, or, if you’re concerned about your risk of developing cervical cancer, a consultation and/ or smear test may be recommended.
What Does a Cervical Smear Test Involve?
The test will be undertaken by a registered healthcare professional (either a Doctor or a Registered nurse). Before the test, you will be asked to undress from the waist down and to lie on the examination couch. The test takes around five minutes and is normally only mildly uncomfortable.
A speculum will be gently put into your vagina to help open the cervix (the entrance to the vagina). A swab will then be taken in order to collect some cells for examination.
The specimen will then be sent to the laboratory for testing. Results are normally available within XXXX weeks.
