Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is a very common sexually transmitted disease and recent studies have shown that infection rates are rising, particularly amongst the under 30’s. Gonorrhoea is transmitted through unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex, or through sharing sex toys.
If left untreated, gonorrhoea can have serious effects on your health. In women, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause infertility and chronic pain. In men, it can cause inflammation of the prostate and testicles which can lead to infertility.
Rarely, gonorrhoea infection can become very serious if it is transmitted to your blood stream. This can lead to skin rashes, inflammation of the joints and inflammation of the brain, spinal cord which can be deadly.
If you think you may have put yourself at risk, we recommend you get tested for this and other STI’s as quickly as possible, limiting the risk of complications. Nu Health perform these tests quickly, professionally and confidentially making it as stress free as possible.

Diagnosis
The only way to know if you have gonorrhoea is to have a test. At Nu Health, we offer a simple urine test (for men) to check for gonorrhoea or a swab test (for women) or if checking for other infections at the same time (recommended).
If you have had anal sex, a swab from this area will be taken at the same time.
In rare cases, gonorrhoea can spread to the eyes. This can be tested with a simple swab.
Treatment
If caught early enough, gonorrhoea can normally be treated with antibiotics (either as an injection or tablet).
