Genital Warts

Genital Warts

Genital warts are a common infection (the second most common in the UK after chlamydia). They appear around the genital and anal area as fleshy, cauliflower like lumps. In most cases, they do not cause any serious health effects, but they can be distressing and embarrassing.

Genital warts are caused by the one of the HPV(human papilloma virus) viruses. The strains which cause these warts are transmitted by skin to skin contact (normally sexual), importantly, you do not need to have had penetrative sex to catch the virus, it can be transmitted by just touch. The warts are most infectious when there is a wart present, however the virus can be transmitted before or after a wart has developed.

Signs and Symptoms

Most people notice one or more fleshy lumps as the first sign of the virus. Most warts are painless, however if they develop around the anal region, they can be itchy and irritating.

Diagnosis

Genital warts are diagnosed by examination of the area by a healthcare professional such as a Doctor or registered nurse.
