Genital Herpes
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus (the same virus that causes coldsores) and is fairly common in the UK. The virus causes small, painful, fluid filled blisters around the genital area. It is transmitted via sexual contact.
Genital herpes is an incurable condition, although treatments can lessen the frequency and severity of outbreaks. Over time, most sufferers find that outbreaks become less frequent.
Signs and Symptoms
Many people do not develop symptoms until months or sometimes years after they have been exposed to the virus. The first outbreak is normally the most severe and you can experience flu-like symptoms.
Primary infection symptoms include:
•Painful red blisters on the genital area that burst and leave painful sores
•Pain on passing urine
•Flu like symptoms including a high temperature, aches and pains and feeling unwell
•Discharge from the vagina in women
The sores will disappear, however this does not mean the virus has gone away; it will lie dormant in the affected nerve/s. The virus can reactivate and cause another outbreak at a later date. Secondary outbreaks tend not to be accompanied by flu-like symptoms, but you may experience a tingling sensation in the area prior to blisters appearing.
Diagnosis
Genital herpes is diagnosed by examination of the area by a healthcare professional such as a Doctor or registered nurse.
Treatment
Unfortunately, genital herpes is incurable and treatments are aimed at relieving symptoms. Depending on the severity of your infection, you may be prescribed a short course of antivirals, or a daily dose to minimize recurrences. Alternatively, lifestyle and home treatment advice may be more suitable.
